WHAT TO EXPECT
A walk in the heart of Kalsa, the ancient citadel of Al-Khalisa, which the Arab emirs chose as their representative seat. A glimpse of the ancient Islamic Balarm where heterogeneous cultures and styles merge. Here, history and ancient art frame the revival of craftsmanship in the Borgo Strafalè. In the shadow of historic palaces and monumental gardens, contemporary street art flourishes, bringing life to once-forgotten places with its themes and colors.
Our journey will begin at the Giardino Garibaldi in Piazza Marina, where we will admire the Ficus Magnolioides, the largest tree in Europe. We will then continue through the alleys of Kalsa, among historic buildings and street art murals, paying homage to the tradition of Sicilian puppetry. From the panoramic Passeggiata delle Cattive, along the ancient walls, we will enjoy views of the sea and the city’s gulf. It was from here that the first hot air balloon took flight in Palermo in the 18th century.
After viewing the baroque Church of the Pietà, we will pass by the Gothic Palazzo Abatellis before arriving at Piazza Magione. From the murals symbolizing the strong city identity to the history of the bombings during World War II, we will also share the story of the fight against the mafia and Paolo Borsellino, who was born right in this neighborhood.
We will then proceed along the scenic Via Alloro, with its numerous baroque palaces, and tell you about the revival of local craftsmanship in Borgo Strafalè. Our walk will conclude at the monumental Steri, a 14th-century feudal residence that served as a prison for the Holy Inquisition.
We look forward to welcoming you for a tour in the historic center of Palermo, discovering Kalsa and its street art, a fascinating treasure trove of traditional and modern culture.
